Tree and Rock

South-Uist-tree-and-rockWhilst walking through a wooded area on the mostly wind swept and barren Island of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides, I saw this grouping of Birch trees and rocks. There is a simple coherence in the colour of the bark and the striations of the rocks. The composition has a balance that  wouldn’t look lost in a designed landscape. How on earth do you recreate the same feel ? The Japanese have a design philosophy for placing such rocks in the garden context where the stones are said to have an inner spirit.
