The Fresh gardens category challenges garden designers to be brave and to step outside of what might be thought of as a traditional London Chelsea garden within a 3m x 3m area. There is no fixed brief which allows for an innovative approach and creative use of familiar and new materials. Inspiration for the design of this beautiful ‘raised tray’ of a garden was provided by cells, the building blocks of life. It works as a coherent conceptual design, with blocks of tightly clipped dome shaped yew surrounded by low alpine plants such as Saxifrages and Geraniums with a couple of circular pools of water. The tray is raised and the base wrapped with mirrors to make the whole construction seem to float above the gravel surface. I can’t wait to use this as inspiration for an area of planting in a London garden design.
